thanksgiving break toll

UArts Day exercise from Christopher Magee on Vimeo.

today the whole school was asked to participate in a day of speed-art community building (my interpretation). the animation people got together to decide on a theme for a piece. two were chosen: "explosions" and "one character eats another." we ran out of time for the eating thing - two many drawings, but managed to squeeze out from 1-3 seconds per person of exploding things. my effort above.

here are a few more artifacts of the day: we created characters before rushing rashly into animation.

here's  "party frog."

this fellow's even less prepared to be festive.

...and this little guy just got left out of the loop altogether.

this event might have been better earlier in the semester - at this point, everyone has final projects on their minds, but we did have a good time, and ate pizza for lunch. the animation students are a jolly bunch, a pleasure to be around, putting up with this obligatory togetherness with good cheer and good humor.

karl did an fine job of screening inspiration in the morning, elliot finished his piece with blinding speed, and we ended up with a little pile of...explosions. will post when it's available.

friend's work-in-progress

My friend Sandro Del Rosario just got a boatload of money for his film-in-progress Los Guardo Italiano. Bravo, and full speed ahead! It looks beautiful.

animating the critique

Animating the Critique - Teaser 01 from Christopher Magee on Vimeo.

yesterday I gave a talk about a recent project I undertook to help me improve my critiquing practice in the classroom. this is the teaser for the talk, above.

there were about 6 or so participating faculty (it's a busy time of year, so the crowd was an intimate one), and they all had something to say. it didn't feel like there would be a follow-up to this, and I suspect there may have been a bit of muddle with regards to just exactly what this was all about (self-therapy for Chris? a move to change the whole university?), but you know, it's done, it materialized, and that's a good thing. I do plan on continuing this to a next phase, regardless.

many thanks to the participating critters (Ben, Steve, and Karl), whose comments were professional, insightful, illuminating, and convivial. also thanks to Andre - inspiring in his thoughtfulness and determination to get the most out of his education.

other rumblings are in the works: Philadelphia Independents, Mach II is shaping up for February, and I'm working with students on a sand animation that tells a Hawaiian legend (blog to be posted soon), in an effort to get us to the islands for a workshop (why not!). For now, here's a link to the proto version of The Village of Kepuhi we started in Object Animation class last spring.

and of course, work on The Ogre & the Mermaid carries on, with character coloring coming tantalizingly close to completion (and then it's on to waves and clouds). the music is going to have to come into play soon - got to find a composer.

before the blink of an eye, winter break will be upon us. but of course, no matter what retail tells us, there's thanksgiving to get through, first.
